Until the beginning of the last century, it was the only coastal route connecting Sapri to Maratea, an important path for trade and the exchange of goods carried on donkey backs.
In some sections, the trail was extremely narrow, and when two donkeys coming from opposite directions met, the animals had to be assessed; and, after compensating half the value of the cheaper donkey to its owner, the animal would be sacrificed and thrown into the sea!
