How to get to Cilento and Vallo di Diano

From Naples International Airport Capodichino (NAP), the municipalities of Cilento and Vallo di Diano can be reached by taxi or private transfer. Alternatively, travellers can take the Alibus shuttle to Naples Central Station and continue south by train, with stops at Vallo della Lucania–Castelnuovo, Agropoli–Castellabate, Ascea–Velia, Pisciotta–Palinuro, Centola, and Sapri. The journey can then be completed with local taxis or buses to the final destination.

From Salerno Costa d’Amalfi and Cilento Airport (QSR), the municipalities of Cilento and Vallo di Diano can be reached by taxi or private transfer, or by shuttle bus to Salerno Railway Station, from where travellers can continue by train or regional buses.

In general, renting a car is one of the most convenient and flexible solutions for exploring Cilento, allowing visitors to reach both coastal destinations and inland mountain villages, where public transport connections may be more limited.

The main railway stations served by Trenitalia for reaching Cilento are Agropoli–Castellabate, Sapri, and Vallo della Lucania–Castelnuovo.

Unlike the coastal areas, the inland territory of Vallo di Diano is not directly served by passenger trains. To reach inland municipalities such as Teggiano, Padula, or Buonabitacolo, Trenitalia provides replacement bus services connecting Sala Consilina with the main railway network (Naples Central Station, Battipaglia, or Salerno).

  • Autolinee Curcio connects the inland municipalities of the Vallo di Diano—including Sala Consilina, Padula, Polla, Buonabitacolo, Casalbuono, Monte San Giacomo, Sassano, Teggiano, and Atena Lucana—with coastal centres such as Vallo della Lucania and Sapri, and also operates services to Salerno and Naples.
  • Infante Bus operates local public transport services along the Cilento Coast, connecting destinations including Marina di Camerota, Palinuro, Pisciotta, Scario, Acciaroli, Pioppi, Santa Maria di Castellabate, Agropoli, and Ascea.
  • Autolinee Lamanna provides services linking inland municipalities of the Vallo di Diano, such as Polla, Sala Consilina, Montesano Scalo, Buonabitacolo, Caselle in Pittari, Sanza, and Sassano, with Salerno, Naples, and the Gulf of Policastro/Sapri area.

Tickets can also be purchased digitally through the Unico Campania app. For journey planning, routes, and up-to-date bus and train timetables, the Moovit app is recommended.

Cilento and Vallo di Diano can be reached by car via the A2 “Autostrada del Mediterraneo” motorway (formerly the A3 Salerno–Reggio Calabria).

How to reach Cilento:
  • From the North (Naples/Salerno): take the A2 motorway southbound. The recommended exits for the northern Cilento coast are Battipaglia and Eboli; continue along the SS 18 state road towards the coastal destinations.
  • From the South (Reggio Calabria): take the A2 motorway northbound. The recommended exits for southern Cilento and Vallo di Diano are Padula–Buonabitacolo or Lagonegro Nord; then follow the SS 517 or SS 18 towards Sapri and Palinuro.
How to reach Vallo di Diano:
  • Recommended A2 motorway exits: Polla, Atena Lucana, Sala Consilina, Padula–Buonabitacolo.
  • Main inland roads: the SS 19 crosses the area from north to south, connecting municipalities such as Teggiano, Polla, Padula, and Sala Consilina.

Recommendations:

  • Inland roads in the Vallo di Diano and in the hill towns of Cilento can be narrow and winding.
  • It is advisable to check for Limited Traffic Zones (ZTL) and parking availability in historic centres and villages before travelling.

Metro del Mare - Cilento lines

The Metrò del Mare is a seasonal maritime transport service designed to explore the Cilento Coast and the Amalfi Coast, with hydrofoils and fast vessels operated by Alicost. It provides an alternative to road travel, allowing visitors to move between ports and seaside destinations while enjoying scenic coastal views. It is ideal for day trips or panoramic transfers during the holiday season.

The routes operating in summer 2026 are structured as follows:
